Whether you're brand new to Pilates or looking to level up your movement routine, you’ve probably wondered:What’s the difference between Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates — and which one should I be doing?
At Method Pilates, we specialize in Reformer-based training — but both forms of Pilates offer unique benefits, and understanding how they differ can help you choose the right fit for your body and goals.
Let’s break it down.
What Is Mat Pilates?
Mat Pilates is the foundation of the Pilates method, originally developed by Joseph Pilates. It’s performed on the floor using just a yoga mat (sometimes with props like rings, bands, or light weights).
Key Benefits of Mat Pilates:
Builds core strength and body control
Improves flexibility and posture
Can be done anywhere, anytime — no equipment needed
Great for beginners to learn foundational breathwork and alignment
However, without resistance equipment, Mat Pilates often relies more on body weight and is sometimes harder to modify for injuries or deeper strength goals.
What Is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates uses a sliding bed-like machine with springs, straps, and a footbar to add resistance and support. This allows for greater range of motion, deeper muscle activation, and a more dynamic full-body workout.
Key Benefits of Reformer Pilates:
Sculpts and tones with spring-based resistance
Strengthens the core, glutes, arms, and posture
Easier to modify for different levels, injuries, or pregnancy
Adds variety and progression to your movement practice
At Method Pilates, our Reformer classes are designed to challenge you with intention — blending strength, stability, and sculpt in every session.
